I teach art in an elementary school in Detroit. Many of our students have limited technology access. Funds are not always available but I've been able to get several grants over the years for my room.
I use Keynote presentations a lot. I have a projector and G5. My other computers are older but the kids draw, mainly w/Kid Pix. I have a couple of cameras (my personal ones). Some of the classes now are looking at some short films on Andy Goldsworthy. We then make patterns w/different color leaves outside and photograph them. We also do some stop motion animation, using "istop motion".
I've been co-producing a daily tv student news broadcast. We film each morning before the bell and then show it throughout the building on closed circuit tv.
Not every school has up to date equipment and knowledgeable students and staff. We inch our way along.
I teach various computer classes at Harper Creek High School. I have a Multimedia Mac lab and we use iMovie, Photoshop, Flash, PowerPoint and Keynote. I also cover cross platform issues so students know various ways to share multimedia (web, PDF, Quicktime, various other export options).
I also teach digital video and digital photography skills. The prices of cameras and computers have dropped a lot in the last decade. I still recommend Mini-DV camcorders if you will be using them with computers to edit. On a side note I just added the new MAC Leopard OS 10.5 to my personal MacBook Pro and so far it is working well. I personally have iLife 08, but at school we use iLife 04. Oh yeah, we also have Final Cut Express in my lab but we need to learn how to use this software better.
I teach computer applications to 7th and 8th graders in Muskegon Heights. Course content includes keyboarding, use of all Microsoft Office software, Internet use and search techniques, digital storytelling, using PhotoStory 3, and beginning web design, using Word and Dreamweaver. I also teach an after school class that includes a weekly news program, yearbook, and advanced web design. My lab contains 30 Compaq computers with Windows XP, 3 Mac computers, and an assortment of scanners, digital cameras, and 2 video cameras. My classes run 5 days a week for 1 semester.
